South Central Service Cooperative’s Youth Mental Health Navigator Program Named 2026 Rural Behavioral Health Organization of the Year

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC) is proud to announce that its Youth Mental Health Navigator (YMHN) program has been selected as the 2026 Rural Behavioral Health Organization of the Year by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Center for Rural Behavioral Health at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

This award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional dedication and innovation in improving mental health services across rural communities. SCSC’s Youth Mental Health Navigators have become a vital resource in addressing limited access to providers, workforce shortages, and the stigma surrounding mental health.

About the Youth Mental Health Navigator Program

SCSC’s Navigators help students and families access timely, effective mental health services by building strong partnerships with school staff, families, and community providers. Their work includes:

  • Supporting families in navigating community mental health resources
  • Providing education, advocacy, and ongoing communication
  • Collaborating with local agencies and service providers to ensure appropriate, equitable, and timely access to mental health supports and services for students and families

Referrals to the Youth Mental Health Navigator program come from a variety of sources, including school staff, community organizations, and families themselves. Navigators serve as a trusted resource, helping connect students and families with appropriate mental health services in a timely and effective manner. This collaborative model strengthens the region’s mental health support network and improves outcomes for youth.

Award Recognition

“We are honored to receive this award and grateful for the dedicated work of our Youth Mental Health Navigators,” said Holle Spessard, Director of Student Support Services. “Their commitment to supporting families and improving access to care is making a significant difference in our rural communities.”

The award will be presented at the Center for Rural Behavioral Health Annual Awards Dinner on April 7, 2026.
