Welcome to SOCRATES Online, the online learning program approved by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and offered by the South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC). SOCRATES Online provides flexible and innovative opportunities for students in our member school districts to earn high school credits through online and blended courses instructed by Minnesota-licensed educators. Our objective is to deliver high-quality education that aligns with state standards and offers students the flexibility of online learning.
What is SOCRATES Online?
SOCRATES Online is a supplementary online learning program that offers additional course options to support students in member districts, complementing their traditional in-school education. Our program enables students to access courses not offered at their local school, create flexible schedules, and diversify their learning experience. With SOCRATES Online, students remain fully enrolled in their local school district while benefiting from the opportunity to explore a wide range of subjects and gain high school credits.
Our Partnership with Northern Star Online (NSO)
At SOCRATES Online, we partner with Northern Star Online (NSO) to offer a variety of online courses. NSO is a leading online education provider with many high school-level courses. NSO offers over 100 high school-level supplementary core and elective courses. These courses are taught by Northern Star Online instructors who are experienced in online education and are fully licensed in Minnesota.
By collaborating with NSO, we ensure that students in SCSC member school districts have access to diverse, high-quality courses that meet Minnesota’s academic standards. This partnership allows for flexible, asynchronous course structures, enabling students to learn at their own pace and on their schedule.
SCSC Career Academies
In addition to our partnership with NSO, SOCRATES Online also supports SCSC Career Academies. These academies offer specialized Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs to member school districts. Students can explore career pathways in healthcare, information technology, and education. Through SOCRATES Online, students can take career-focused courses and earn high school credits while gaining valuable skills to prepare for future careers.
By enrolling in SCSC Career Academies, students can kick start their career education, acquire practical experience, and explore diverse career paths—all within a flexible online learning environment.
SCSC Instructional Services Agreement
South Central Service Cooperative provides member school districts a cost-effective Instructional Services Agreement for online learning opportunities. This agreement does not require districts to participate but enables them to achieve significant savings if students opt to take additional online courses through SOCRATES Online. The agreement allows member school districts to pay reduced regional tuition for students enrolled in online classes, retaining funds in the school district.
